The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is a Level I tertiary multicampus teaching facility affiliated with the University of Maryland, School of Medicine and over 100 educational institutions. The VAMHCS consists of the acute care Baltimore facility; the multi building Perry Point campus with acute medicine, mental health and long term care; the Loch Raven campus with long term care; and six urban and rural outpatient clinics.

Duties of the Position with include but will not be limited to:
*Provides case management for a case load of Veterans in the HUD-VASH program utilizing the Housing First model.
*Interviews Veterans and their family members/significant others to establish facts about the Veteran's situation, presenting problems and their causes, and the impact of such problems on the Veteran's functioning and health as part of a comprehensive psychosocial assessment. Interprets and explains VA's treatment and benefit programs.
*On an inpatient/outpatient basis, the nurse finds a suitable means of treatment to help Veterans and/or significant others cope with stressful situations. Treatment is aimed at helping Veterans find practical solutions to problems.
*Documents independently in the medical records utilizing paper and/or electronic formats, including assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, follow-up and referral.
*Offers patient and family/significant other educational services. Takes responsibility for identifying the health education needs of Veterans and working with interdisciplinary team members on a plan to address those needs.
*Participating in program planning and development, advising the Program Manager, Homeless Program of shifting trends with case loads, and making recommendations on program procedure or policy changes.
*Perform site inspections of HUD-VASH apartments to ensure that Veterans reside in safe environments and in compliance with local housing codes. The incumbent will have regularly scheduled meetings with landlords and Public Housing Authority (PHA) officials to ensure the availability of Section 8 Housing Choice eligible housing.
*Promotes an environment conducive to excellence in nursing practice and patient satisfaction. Actively contributes to group activities related to patient care and staff projects. Displays a willing and positive outlook towards professional growth.

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
*Associate degree/diploma in Nursing WITH a Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare related field or a BSN.
*Possess at least two (2) years of RN mental health and/or behavioral health nursing practice in an outpatient treatment or community outreach experience.
* Be acquainted with psychiatric and behavioral health clinical treatment modalities and principles or psychosocial rehabilitation .
*Current BLS certification.
*Possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license.
*Grade Determinations: * The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. * Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
