About the Position: This position is located at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital within the Pediatric Unit offering access to high-quality critical care to Pediatric patients ranging from newborn to 18 years old that require close monitoring and support from specialized equipment and medication. The Pediatric Unit is furnished with advanced equipment and is staffed by knowledgeable experts who specialize in caring for Pediatric patients suffering from a wide variety of medical conditions. The position requires the selected candidate be available to perform rotating shift work.

Duties

As a Clinical Nurse (Pediatrics) you will provide specialty nursing care to pediatric and adolescent patients at a medical treatment facility. You will serve as the patient advocate and collaborate with physician and other professional health care providers. You can expect to perform a variety of nursing duties to include assessing patient's condition and planning and implementing patient care plan, administer intravenous fluids and medications, order diagnostic tests as needed, provide education and support to the patients and their families, and respond to life-saving situations. You will assess, coordinate, plan, and implement the newest approaches and practices to deliver safe, efficient, and cost effective care for patients using nursing standards and protocols for treatment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. (You must submit a copy of your transcripts.)

Licensure: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained. (You must submit a copy of your license.)

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Providing professional nursing care in a medical treatment facility, in accordance with established policies and procedures to assess the needs of pediatric and adolescent patients; monitoring patients condition; and resolving concerns of patients and family members.

Education Substitution for Experience required: Completion of all requirements for a Doctoral degree (PH.D or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education. Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (i.e. teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.). (Note: You must provide a copy of your transcripts).

Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-11: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute, the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond one year by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is preferred.
  • Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work and Emotional Support (STABLE) certification is preferred.
