Physician Assistant- Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Bayview). This is a day shift position (4 ten hour shifts).
The Physician Assistant (PA) functions as the primary provider for the Department of Adult Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Bayview Medical Center. The PA works collaboratively with faculty and residents to provide care for plastic/reconstructive surgery patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings, both pre and post operatively. The PA manages inpatient care, assists in the operating room and treats patients independently and with the surgeons in the ambulatory clinic setting. Other duties include facilitating discharge and providing patient/family education as needed. The PA also interacts with other attending physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, residents, nursing staff, support staff, administrators, and family members. The position requires evidence-based decision-making when assessing and treating patients.
Incorporates into practice, theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families and interdisciplinary health care team members. Analytical ability is necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short-term management of acute and chronic health conditions. Highly developed interpersonal skills are required to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and assist with problem solving. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel.
Ability to function effectively and adapt to a dynamic, and often changing work environment. Ability to work cooperatively within own unit/department and with other units and departments. Effectively communicates patient care and related professional information with co-workers. Insures that patient information is kept private and confidential. Provides comprehensive, age appropriate care to patients as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team. Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff and departmental needs. Acts as an educational and clinical resource to nursing and resident staff as well as to patients and their families.
May obtain credentials to perform the following interventions and procedures: Insert a pulmonary artery catheter; Insert a temporary transvenous cardiac pacemaker; Endotracheal intubation; Surgical Cricothyroidostomy; Insert chest tubes; Thoracentesis; Interpret information from invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitors; Assist physician with surgical procedures in the operating room; Paracentesis; Venous cut down procedures; Perform conscious IV sedation; Control external hemorrhage; Arterial puncture; Insert peripheral and central venous catheters; Lumbar puncture; Gastric intubation; Insert Foley catheter. Prescribe, apply, and change dressings and bandages. Perform and interpret EKG’s. Perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. Administer local anesthetics.
Other Job Functions: Respond to emergencies in the Emergency Department as members of the trauma team. Orient students, surgical residents and new faculty members to the clinical sites. Serve as sub-investigators for funded clinical trials.
Must be certified and licensed Physician Assistant in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
