To assist health care professionals with the management of patient care services, utilize nursing judgment to provide assessment and evaluation of patients, and to perform nursing skills in the care and treatment of patients.

Essential Functions

Performs nursing assessment of patients, both in person and via telephone, in accordance with established protocols, and implements proper course of action. Performs risk assessment of asymptomatic patients seeking screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI/HIV testing), and follows UHS policies and procedures for STD/HIV laboratory testing, test interpretation, and patient counseling. Assists with the evaluation and care of patients to be seen by UHS providers. Performs department specific procedures and treatments such as EKGs, peak flows, vision testing, nebulizer therapy, ear irrigations, wound care, phlebotomy, point of care laboratory testing, IV therapy, and application of orthopedic devices. Performs administrative duties, and participates in quality improvement and safety initiatives. Exhibits exceptional customer service, professionalism and team work in all aspects of work. Maintains a level of knowledge conducive to providing high quality patient care. Actively participates in maintaining a safe and clean working environment.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance pattern. Opportunity to participate in special projects and nursing committees. Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas. One year of experience as a Registered Nurse in an ambulatory care setting such as primary care, urgent care or emergency room. CPR certification within 90 days of hire. Experience with and a moderate comfort level documenting in an electronic medical records. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with a diverse community and provide services from a none judgmental perspective. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Three or more years of experience as a Registered Nurse. More than one year of experience in an ambulatory, outpatient, or urgent care clinic, emergency room, or college health setting. Experience performing patient assessments using telephone triage protocols. Experience involving STI screening and counseling for STI risk reduction and PrEP. Phlebotomy and IV Skills. Experience using electronic medical records. Demonstrated good communication, interpersonal skills, team-building skills, and professional demeanor.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
